Buildstart was introduced on 27 October 2008 to stimulate new housing construction across the Northern Territory and was extended on 19 May 2009. It is open to persons not eligible for the First Home Owner Grant.

Buildstart provides a $14 000 grant to eligible persons, that:

• enter into a contract to purchase a ‘new’ house or a ‘new’ unit; or
• enter into a contract to build a house;
• in the case of an owner builder, commence construction of a house,
  
  between 27 October 2008 and 31 December 2009 inclusive.

The scheme is also open to people wanting to purchase an investment property, owner-builders and companies and trusts.
